Frequently Asked Questions
- How can I benefit from ADSL service?
ADSL’s fixed monthly rate, “always on” connectivity, along with its’ proven technology and reliable speeds make ADSL the preferred broadband connection locally and internationally. Phone calls and faxes can be made and received and sent at all times, no need to suspend your Internet connection.
- Where is ADSL available?
In order for ADSL to function, you need to have an exchange that is ADSL enabled. To confirm whether or not your exchange is DSL enabled please click here.
- What are the requirements for ADSL service?
First, you'll need a compatible ADSL router. Your computers need to be network ready with network interface cards installed. If you plan to connect ADSL to your office network, you may need to make configuration changes to your LAN. Finally, if you plan on using your ADSL service to access the internet, you'll need a Tradepage Internet account.
- What speed do you get?
Telkom does not guarantee any throughput speeds on ADSL access. ADSL operates over the same pair of copper wires that is used for telephone service, and is provided only in conjunction with a telephone service. You can make and receive calls or send a fax and surf the Internet at the same time. You will not be billed for your connection time when you make use of any of the Telkom ADSL services.
The profiles for the ADSL services are -
192 and 384 change to "up to 384" - Profile should be:
Down stream: min 256kbps; max 384kbps
Up stream: min 64kbps; max 128kbps
512 change to "up to 512" - Profile should be:
Down stream: min 416kbps; max 512kbps
Up stream: min 192kbps; max 256kbps
1024 change to "up to 4Meg" - Profile should be:
Down stream: min 640kbps; max 4096kbps
Up stream: min 256kbps; max 384kbps
- How do I know if account has been capped?
Clients are able to track their usage by visiting http://adsl.tradepage.co.za and entering their ADSL details. They are also able to email through reports showing the daily, weekly or monthly usage. Should the cap be reached before month end the service is suspended and they are required to purchase bandwidth for the duration of the month, this bandwidth does NOT get carried over.
- What service guarantees are there on ADSL?
ADSL is a best effort service and no guarantees are provided on throughput. ADSL is an access medium to the Internet or your preferred ISP and will not overcome any bandwidth related constraints within the World Wide Web.
- Do I need a new modem?
When ordering ADSL it is necessary to purchase an ADSL modem. Telkom are able to supply clients with either a USB modem, for use on a single computer or a Wifi router with 4 Ethernet ports, for a company network or hotspot. Alternatively clients may purchase their own modem, however Telkom do not offer support for these modems.
